Wildcat Week In Review: August 21st-27th

The 2017 Fall Sports season is underway, and several of Millbrook’s athletic teams have found early success.

Check below for updates, scores, stats, and standings on each of the fall teams that participated in contests during this past week.

 

Football

Overall Record: 1-1

This Week: 39-9 win at Wakefield

Next Week: at Heritage (7:00 PM)

 

Millbrook Football bounced back in a big way with a 39-9 road win at Wakefield. Behind the strength of three rushing touchdowns, and 131 yards on the ground from running back Chris Twitty, the Wildcats dispatched of the Wolverines for its first win of the season.

For the second time in as many weeks, Tyler Snead got Millbrook on the board with a special teams score. The senior returner took a punt 66-yards to the house for the early advantage. Snead would later grab a 74-yard touchdown pass from Ford Werness.

Twitty hit Wakefield with the back-breaker in the third quarter following an 82-yard touchdown run. Snead would scamper in for two points on the ensuing conversion, and Millbrook would extend its lead to thirty. Twitty lead the team with 15 carries, and over 131 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Bryan Squires helped the Wildcats pitch a shutout with a team-high 11 tackles. Jayden Pauling recovered his third fumble of the season in the contest as Wakefield turned the ball over twice.

Will Gentile registered his first field goal of the season when he split the uprights from 30 yards out. He also hit all four of his extra point attempts making him a perfect 5-for-5 so far this season.

Millbrook concludes a season-opening three game road swing this Friday night when it travels to Heritage, the #2 ranked team in the area. The Wildcats have defeated the Huskies in each of the last four seasons with three of the four games ending on a game-winning defensive stand from the Wildcats.

 

Volleyball

Overall Record: 3-3

This Week: Win vs. Athens Drive, Loss to James Island, Loss at North Myrtle Beach

Next Week: Home against Wakefield and Sanderson

 

Millbrook opened its week with a home non-conference victory over Athens Drive. The Wildcats eased past the Jaguars in straight sets, 3-0.

Taylor Rebne and Skyler Rogerson lead a balanced attack with nine kills, and eight kills respectively. Lainey Anderson added 12 assists, and Arianna Rosario tacked on to her team lead in blocks with two more.

Millbrook fell back to the .500 mark with a pair of two-set losses in South Carolina. James Island defeated the Wildcats on Friday night, and the host school North Myrtle Beach, who entered ranked as South Carolina's top ranked 4A team took Saturday's contest by a 2-0 score.

The Wildcats wrap up its non-conference slate this upcoming week when it faces Wakefield at home. Cap-7 play begins on Thursday when Sanderson pays visit.

 

Men’s Soccer

Overall Record: 1-3-1

This Week: Loss at Mount Tabor, Win vs. Holly Springs, and Draw vs. AC Reynolds

Next Week: Home vs. East Wake, at Heritage, and at Knightdale

 

The Wildcats found its way into the win column for the first time this season with a strong showing against some of the premier programs in the state.

Paul Phillips recorded a shutout, and Santiago Romero netted his second goal in as many contests to help lead Millbrook to a 2-0 victory against Holly Springs on Friday night.

Phillips followed with a shutout of AC Reynolds on Saturday, but the Wildcats were unable to tally a score of its own in a 0-0 draw.

Romero started the week with his first goal of the season in a 4-1 loss in Winston Salem to Mount Tabor.

Non-conference play continues this week with a home match against East Wake, and trips to Heritage and Knightdale.

 

Women’s Tennis

Overall Record: 1-2
This Week: Loss vs. Enloe, Loss at Leesville Road

Next Week: Home vs. Cardinal Gibbons, and at Sanderson

 

Millbrook dropped a heartbreaker to start the Cap-7 Conference portion of its schedule. For the fourth time in the last three seasons, the Wildcats battled with Enloe deep into doubles as the Eagles came out on top, 5-4.

Leesville Road defeated Millbrook on its home court by a score of 7-2 on Thursday afternoon.

This Week: Race cancelled at Wakefield

Next Week: Race against Southeast Raleigh

 

Millbrook will open up its 2017 XC slate on Wednesday evening with a race on the road against Southeast Raleigh
