We will begin on May 3 with our traditional winter sports: boys basketball, girls basketball, and cheerleading. This year athletics will look a little different as compared to the past. There will be no interscholastic athletic competition against opposing middle schools. Instead, student athletes will have the opportunity to participate in skill development and conditioning. Health and safety will be our top priority as we conduct these athletic skill sessions.

May 3-May 21  *There will be no skill sessions on asynchronous remote learning days or on Fridays.

Skill sessions will occur Monday-Thursday, begin right after school and end at 4:30pm. Virtual academy students will need to arrive to the front of the school between 3:05 and 3:20pm and enter the building through the front doors. Please complete a self-screening process at home to ensure you are healthy to attend.

Two activity busses will be available after the skill sessions to take kids to select stops. The busses will leave Durant at 4:45pm and you can view the stops here.

6th, 7th, and 8th graders will have the opportunity to participate in these skill sessions, with priority going to 7th and 8th graders. Depending on the number of students who sign up, we may be able to have everyone come everyday, or we may have to split up into groups. If we split into groups, students will be assigned dates to come, and we will do our best to make sure the days are even for everyone.

Plan A student athletes (non-virtual academy students) will have the opportunity to attend these sessions during their designated dates. Plan A students must be in school the day of their skill session in order to attend. If you are absent, you cannot come into the school for athletics.  Locker rooms will not be available, so Plan A students should come to school dressed for their after school activity and have a water bottle with their name on it. You may want to bring an extra mask those days as well if you want a fresh mask prior to starting physical activity.

Virtual academy student athletes should be dropped off at the front of the school between 3:05-3:20pm and enter through the front doors. A staff member will be out in the front entrance parking lot to greet you. No health screening will be conducted on site, but please complete the self-screening at home.

The self-screening process is as follows per WCPSS:

You are not allowed onto WCPSS property if you are:
Diagnosed with COVID-19 within the past 10 days
Exposed to COVID-19 within the past 14 days and not fully vaccinated
Instructed to quarantine
Experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Sick or experiencing symptoms of illness
100.4° fever or higher
Sore throat
New cough
New shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
New loss of taste or smell
Diarrhea or vomiting
New severe headache

You will need to complete 3 forms in order to be eligible to attend any skill session. You will need to complete a sport interest form to be assigned a week, the pre-participation athletic paperwork , and a Covid-19 Pre-Participation Health Questionnaire in order to participate.

1. Interest Form

In order to be assigned days to attend, you must fill out an interest form.  Here is the WINTER SPORTS INTEREST FORM. The winter interest form must be completed by THURSDAY, APRIL 29. You will not be assigned days to come if you do not fill this out. From this form, Mrs. Mauder will be able to see the numbers of students interested. She will work on assigning students days to come if interest is high to ensure that numbers allow safety for all and everyone has equal opportunity to participate. Mrs. Mauder will let you know the dates you are allowed to attend through email. You can only attend those dates if you are healthy and have turned in your pre-participation athletic paperwork.

2. Pre-Participation Athletic Paperwork

All student athletes will need to have a valid physical (doctor exam form) and a current athletic participation packet on file with Mrs. Mauder in order to participate. This paperwork must be completed prior to your first day of practice. The pre-participation athletic paperwork will be submitted online through our registration portal on our athletics website. Almost all pages can easily be filled out and signed online. The only page that you must scan into the online portal is the physical exam page (doctor page 5).  If you do not have access to a scanner to submit that page, then you may hand a paper copy into Mrs. Mauder. This pre-participation athletic paperwork will only need to be submitted one time this year, even if you participate in multiple sport seasons. If you already participated in a fall or spring sport, you do not need to complete this step again. Once Mrs. Mauder has received and reviewed your paperwork submission, she will reach out to you letting you know your status.

3. Covid-19 Pre-Participation Health Questionnaire

The Covid-19 Pre-Participation Health Questionnaire must be printed, completed, and signed by both the student athlete and parent/guardian. This form must be turned into Mrs. Mauder on the first day of their skill session.

We know you may have questions and concerns about how athletics will look this year. Mrs. Mauder will be holding virtual informational parent meetings to help clarify all of this information as well as answer all questions you have prior to each sport season beginning. Registration to attend these meetings will be posted online prior to the meetings. Once registered, a link will be sent to families to access the live Google Meet. If you cannot attend a meeting, we will post recordings of the meetings and an FAQ sheet on the athletics website. Mrs. Mauder will also be happy to help answer any questions you have through email at
