XC comes away victorious on Senior Night

By Evan Moesta, 10/01/15, 3:30AM EDT

Millbrook Cross Country is undefeated this season in dual meets as they dispatched of Heritage on Wednesday evening at the Millbrook Exchange Park. The Wildcats established an early lead ahead of the pack with their top 4 guys and girls, and they didn't look back from there in one of the team's final Cap-8 races of the season.

It was Senior Night, as Rachel Navarro, Kaylee Saaranen, Kaylie Hinckley, Jack Banask, Evan Hendricks, Andrew Orr, Chris Holt, Jason Holt, Tyler Trudeau, and Alex Scarboro were honored for their time with the Cross Country program. It would be a host of seniors that would come through big for the Wildcats vs. the Huskies.

On the girls side, Coach Schneidewind's group put four runners in the top five and the Wildcats' fifth scorer came in seventh. From start to finish, the top four girls led the race. Navarro and Hinckley would lead Millbrook on Wednesday evening. In the boys race that followed, it was a very similar outcome, the 'Cats grabbed four of the top five spots, and the fifth scorer for Millbrook crossed the finish line in sixth place. Jack Banask led the pack and was followed by fellow senior, Evan Hendricks. Going into the final stretch of the season, Banask was impressed by the way the Wildcats' runners have been performing.

"We made some smart moves about halfway through the race. The only competitor for Heritage we managed to drop right after the 3k mark by a perfect surge. From then on it was smooth sailing for us four in front. We really wanted to take the full sweep although we fell about a half second short... Over all though I'm impressed by how deep our boys are time wise."

Next up for the Wildcats is a trip out to the Wake Med Athletic Park to race Leesville next Wednesday night. The girls race kicks off at 5:00, followed by the boys race at 5:30. That race, and one vs. Sanderson the following week is all that stands between Millbrook and the postseason. The Cap-8 Championship, Regionals, and the State Championship are coming up quickly. Going into this final leg of the regular season, the Wildcats have three girls runners that have posted sub-22 times this season in Maya Celetti (20:08), Emilie Buzitsky (20:09), and Rachel Navarro (21:17). On the boys side, a trio of Wildcats have recorded sub-18 times led by Tucker Cera (16:13), Luke Gostling (16:19), and Evan Hendricks (17:33).
