Freshman Tennis player, Shea Cirillo has been named the Millbrook PDQ Athlete of the Week for the week of October 19th. Shea went 3-1 in singles during last week and earned a berth into this weekend's 4A Mideastern Regionals.
Shea started the week with a thrilling third set win over Leesville's Callie Michaud, 6-2, 2-6, 0-0 (10-7). It was the fifth time this season that she had played into a third set, and the second time that she had defeated Michaud this season. With that win, Cirillo grabbed the Wildcats only win in an 8-1 loss. Her victory also helped her end the regular season with the team's best singles record at 10-4.
Coach Dauphinais turned to a pair of freshmen in the singles portion of the Cap-8 Tournament a day later, and it was once again Cirillo who shined. Shea defeated Heritage's Janelle Maffucci for the third time this season to advance to the 2nd Round of the tournament, the win came in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. That set up a match against one of Sanderson's top seniors in Kate Griffin. For the two girls, it was their first time squaring off, and a trip to the semi-finals, along with a regional tournament berth was on the line. Griffin jumped ahead early to win the first set 6-2. Cirillo was well on her way to losing in straight sets as Griffin took a 5-2 lead in the second set. On top of that, Shea was down 40-15, one point from being knocked out of the tournament. Not only did the Wildcat Freshman come back to win the 2nd set, 7-5, but she won the third set as well, 11-9, to punch her ticket to the semi-final round the following day.
Her resiliency earned her a spot in the tournament's final four. Along with teammate, Brianna Taranto, Shea was one of only two freshmen in the final four. She was also the only final four player to not be her school's #1 in singles. Cirillo would end up taking 3rd Place in the tournament after falling to two-time state champion, Susanne Boyden of Wakefield. Despite the loss, she currently has a 12-5 record going into the 4A Mideastern Regionals on Friday at Millbrook Exchange Park and Sanderson HS. Of those 12 wins, 5 of them have now come in a third and final set. Cirillo also earned All-Conference honors was qualifying for the final four of the Cap-8 Tournament.
