It had been awhile since the Millbrook Tennis team beat Wakefield. The Wolverines are back-to-back state champions, and on both years the Wildcats have fallen in the Regional Final to their Cap-8 Conference foes. With a hungry group of seniors who haven’t defeated Wakefield since winning it all in 2013, the Wildcats were able to win late on a decisive doubles match from Austin Cobb and Josiah Schainblatt.
The Wildcats dropped their top two singles matches but strong play from Austin Cobb moved him to 3-0 in singles in his return to the court. On the back end of the singles lineup, Millbrook was able to salvage a 3-3 tie going into doubles play as Mohamed Almontaser, and freshman Andrew Lopez picked up key wins.
Millbrook was able to stay alive following a win from their #3 doubles pairing of Michael Moody and Rayan Jabr which set the table for the Cobb and Schainblatt to clinch the match.
Last year, Austin Cobb and Josiah Schainblatt finished second in the state in doubles after falling the championship vs. Wakefield. Thursday night was a night of redemption in the minds of the Wildcat duo. “We wanted this so bad tonight” said Cobb, “playing in individuals last year against them made us so much more mentally tough, and it prepared us for a situation like today where the match is on the line and there isn’t a ton of light”. The Wolverines were able to hang tight early on but Millbrook proved to be too much, winning 8-3 and clinching the match. “You certainly face a lot of adversity in a match like this and we just wanted it more than they did and it showed”. For Cobb it was the first time he had clinched a match vs. Wakefield since his freshman year in 2013, for Schainblatt it was the first time he had done so in his career.
Millbrook moves to 4-1 on the season with the victory, they’re now 3-1 in the Cap-8 Conference.
