It is a 5k race (3.1 miles) that is typically all off-road. XC runners run through all terrains and in all weather conditions. Every course is unique and presents different challenges
Because it's awesome. You get in great shape, getting faster through sprint drills, working core and stronger through being in the weight room, and increased endurance through long runs.

Runners come in all shapes and sizes and run for a variety of reasons. Some run because they love to. Some run to get in shape for a sport in another season, as XC will get you into GREAT shape with amazing endurance. With this in mind, soccer players and swimmers tend to have good success because the sports require similar qualities to be successful. Still others run for their personal fitness and to compete against their own personal times. Yet all athletes can benefit from running cross country.
